Respond Correctly When in Danger
Alerting the public
Disasters can occur at very short notice and sometimes without any advance warning. This is why Switzerland has a nationwide network of sirens to alert the at-risk population of an impending emergency. Indeed, Switzerland has set itself the ambitious goal of being able to alert every single member of the public, no matter where they live. Thanks to this network of some 5 000 stationary and 2 200 mobile sirens, this goal has almost been achieved, at least in residential areas.
After the general alarm is sounded, information is always provided via radio. However, the authorities and the emergency task forces also rely on the population taking personal responsibility for their emergency preparedness. For example, the authorities recommend that the public has a transistor radio and a spare set of batteries at the ready. It is also important that neighbours keep one another informed of developments.
